Monkey Island - Debug Mode

Back when the monkey island games were being created the developers and playtesters used certain commands to help them. Using these they could skip rooms, make the game run faster, move to a different section of the game and more. These commands are still present in the retail versions of the games - as part of debug mode.

Despite its scary-sounding name debug mode isnt complicated at all. You dont need to have your favourite hex editor tatooed on your arm just to use it. In fact its really just a cheat mode, and like all cheat codes, no matter how much you type it, a nude Lara Croft really wont appear (joke circa 1997). Debug mode is enabled by typing in a certain phrase ingame and then pressing a key combination to activate it.

The Secret of Monkey Island
Type "hardyharhar" and press control-shift-D to activate debug mode.

Skip rooms: This works with every version of monkey island 1 ever released. If you have the CD version though there are other things you can do.

CD Version:
  • Control and E - Examine/set a scumm variable

Escape from Monkey Island
There are debug functions in the game, but no-one has been able to activate them yet.

Other miscellaneous things:
Once you've activated debug mode, you dont need to do it again every time you want to enter a debug command.

If you skip rooms in the middle of a cutscene or a scene when the inventory dissapears you can end up with some really strange effects.

In MI1 use bootparam 4444, give all the bananas to the monkey and change to room 35, the rat will now follow you, just as the monkey would normally.

In MI1 you can walk round the game as 'tiny Guybrush', change to room 2 (the map) then change back to another room.

If you have MI1 CD you can use boot parameters on the command line, eg. starting "Monkey1.exe 15" will make the load the game with Guybrush in the Cannibal Village.

There is also debug information that cant be accessed. For example in MI1 Ega there is a function to detect the machine speed as either 'Molasses machine', 'Street legal machine', or 'Trans-warp drive machine' and there is a function to switch between a one button interface and a two button interface.

Ive beaten many a games in my life but none were as fun and/or funny as this one.How the story unfolded was genius,and the lines like "Thats the second biggest duck i've ever had in in my pants"They keep you laughing and yet very content in playing this game and not putting it down until you've seen it all.That is why (I love this game!!!) The rat and the monkey isn't the only one that follows Guybrush after Guybrush has given the monkey all the bananas. The Melee Island lookout does too!

You can also in the monkey island directory from dos just type:
"monkey 28" for instance to go to the scummbar, you can even go to some places you can't really visit in the game (like on Elaine's face)
