Ooooh, ooooh, they like it

Gabez, our favourite news-updater (also our only news-updater, by the looks of it lately) has added a media-clipping to our media section. This is from PC Zone, which looks back at Monkey Island 2, and is well worth a look.

Also, demos have been added to our download section.

Comment from Haggis

"...a Gilbert-less LucasArts decided to carry on regardless several years later with a couple of inferior sequels." What were they thinking? The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island were great games, and humour-wise, they were certainly no less great than the first two installments.

"The 'twist' ending was patently designed to end the series"

That's wrong. Ron Gilbert had a MI3 planned. Journalists should get their facts straight before publishing them.

Haggis: PC Zone liked CMI and EMI, they're just saying that in comparison they're inferior sequels.

Dalixam: I wouldn't be so sure...

Yeah, but that dosn't necessarily mean that he didn't want the ending of mi2 to end the series. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't... always swear by Ron's words. If you see what I mean.

What is certain, though, is that the sequels kind of mucked up that trick ending.

Yeah, Gabez is right - don't always take Gilbert's word as gospel. They did have a sequel planned, that's true, but the ending in MI2 was supposed to be how MI1 ended, without any further sequels.

Hmmm, in comparison, huh? Well, actually, I don't see how CMI or EMI are any worse than SMI and MI2. The only excuse for glorifying the first two games over the latter two is nostalgia. People tend to think back to earlier, nice experiences, and romanticise the image they have of that on their retinas. In ten years or so, people will probably sigh and think back of the good old days of CMI and EMI, "when gaming was still on a grey box with a keyboard and a mouse". That's just my $ 0.02.

the part of the reason why I love the original so much is because it makes fun of itself and its production value.
"Ever notice how all the backgrounds are starting to look the same?"
"Wow! This was so worth 35.95 dollars + tax!"
"Never pay more than 30 dollars for a computer game"
etc...

In many ways I agree with you Haggis, but this article was more about a person's opinion rather than facts.

And yeah, I loved the way SOMI - and in some ways Mi2 - made fun of itself.
